"Just missed" is how the Blazer hockey team felt at the end of this season. Head coach Tom Peart’s CSB hockey squad finished in fifth place in the MIAC and barely missed making the MIAC Tournament. The Blazers finished 12-9-2 (9-7-2, MIAC). The Blazers had an up and down year, highlighted by a five game winning streak in the middle of the season and a trip to Italy during J-term. “We ‘just missed’ beating some of the top teams in the conference this season and consequently, we ‘just missed’ the play-offs. Next year we need to work on being one of the elite teams in the MIAC!” says Peart. The Blazers started off the season by sweeping of Concordia-Moorhead with a combined score of 15-6. CSB then lost 7 of their next eight, but the teams they competed against in that stretch were some of the best in the country including Augsburg, Gustavus, and the University of North Dakota. CSB then skated to five straight wins including a sweep of their guests Union College from New York.
Paula Vogt and Katy Rollwagen led the Blazers with All-MIAC performances every night. The pair finished tied for second in the MIAC points list with 35 points apiece. Vogt scored 19 goals in MIAC play while Rollwagen notched 17 goals. Kelly Wegwerth added 10 more goals and 21 assists. First Year Kate Hall took care of most of the net minding duties, getting a hands-on lesson in the tough MIAC. She established herself as one of the most talented goalies in the conference. Noted for their strong skating and aggressive forechecking, the Blazers competed well against the MIAC’s elite and will make another run at the MIAC tournament next season.
