Much like a fine wine, the Blazers hockey program is getting better with age. The Blazers' talent has improved annually since the inaugural season. This is only Saint Ben's third year as an Intercollegiate woman's hockey team and already they have proven to be a major contender in the MIAC. CSB has qualified for the MIAC playoffs for the second year in a row.
In just his first year, head coach Tom Peart led the Blazers to a 14-12-1 overall record and a 6-7-1 record in the MIAC finishing in fourth place. Peart switched positions this year with Bill Kelly, 1997-99 head coach, who took over assistant coaching duties. The Blazers faced off against Augsburg in first round of the MIAC playoffs but could not hold off the Auggies charge.
Some highlights of the season for the Blazers included sweeping the Tommies and a successful trip to New York, where Saint Ben's beat perennial eastern powers Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of New York and Union College.
Saint Ben's had two athletes finish among the nations best in scoring. Junior Paula Vogt was sixth best in the nation with 27 goals and 23 assists for 50 points. Sophomore Katy Rollwagen was seventh best in the nation with 12 goals and 35 assists for 47 points. Rollwagen led the nation with 35 assists.
Saint Ben's will return their entire roster next season and are in reach of a MIAC title.
