The Blazers were tied 2-2 with the Pipers early in the third but the last half of that period was taken by Hamline University with the final score of 5-2.
The College of Saint Benedict’s (4-11-2 MIAC, 4-15-2) senior class played especially competitively trying to get their last home-game win in their college careers. Senior Ashley Davenport (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) was on her game when she received an assist from Michelle Eberhard (Roseville, Minn.) and Abby Kephart (Dassel, Minn.) and scored the only goal in the second.
Minutes later Davenport juked past two defenders and fired a shot. The ring from the post gave the Blazers’ fans a burst of excitement, but the close call was waved off by the officials.
CSB’s Patty King (St. Paul, Minn.) assisted Gretchen Leyendecker’s (Rochester, Minn.) goal to bring the game to a tie at 3:11 in the third. It was a great comeback for the Blazers to return from two under the Pipers, but they just couldn’t get the next goal.
The game had started slowly for the Blazers allowing the Pipers to score twice unanswered in the first period, but Saint Benedict’s intensity never left the game as they only played harder as time went on.
Although CSB won in faceoffs 33-29, Saint Benedict’s penalties are what gave Hamline just what they needed to allow them to score during two power plays, one being the last goal of the game.
Saint Benedict will play their final game of the season against Hamline at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23 in St. Paul, Minn.
