Cobbers Take Weekend Series

02/16/2008

The College of Saint Benedict’s (4-10-2 MIAC, 4-14-2) impressive offensive strikes, scoring three goals, weren’t enough to take the win as Concordia College (10-4-2 MIAC, 10-9-2) scored one more than CSB for the 4-3 victory.

The Blazers’ Maggie Kinney (Woodbury, Minn.) scored her eighth goal of the season at 7:03 in the third.  From there, Saint Benedict pushed forward but was never able to get the game tying goal. Kinney is the Blazers’ top scorer and it was her second goal against the Cobbers this weekend.

CSB’s Ashley Davenport (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and Ashley Rebeck (Saint Andrews, Canada) scored back to back goals in the second to temporarily give CSB the one up lead.  Janae Coauette (Crookston, Minn.) and Gretchen Leyendecker (Rochester, Minn.) assisted Davenport; Maggie Rothstein (Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Abby Milton (Maple Grove, Minn.) were the support for Rebeck’s goal.

Concordia later scored three unanswered goals in a row. The Blazers then produced their best offensive attack in the third period with 10 shot to the Cobbers’ 7 but were only able to knock one in. CC’s goaltender Amber Malcolm turned aside nine shots in the final frame.

The two teams went scoreless on the power plays. CSB was 0-for-3 and CC was 0-for-2.  The Blazers did however win most the faceoffs with 33 to Concordia’s 32. CSB’s Amanda Plumm (Lake Elmo, Minn.) made 26 saves.

The Blazers next game will be against Hamline at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22 at the MAC in St. Cloud. This will be the Blazers' last home game of the 2007-08 season.
