Blazers fall to top team in MIAC

02/08/2008

The College of Saint Benedict (4-7-2 MIAC, 4-11-2) put up a first-rate effort in attempt to end the undefeated MIAC record of Gustavus Adolphus College (13-0-0 MIAC, 18-2-0), but the Gusties prevailed 3-0.

The Blazers’ defense was remarkable at keeping the Golden Gusties to the outside and did not give up many rebounds from missed or blocked shots. Saint Benedicts’ Abbie Helminen (Brighton, Mich.) played another exceptional game by making 39 saves in the net. Helminen is ranked fourth in the conference in save percentage at 92.5%.

Gustavus did not seem to have had many other teams stand up to them as well as the Blazers did. CSB prevented 4 out of 5 of the Gusties power play opportunities. Saint Benedict even held their ground between the times of 15:19 to 16:10 when they were short handed by two athletes.

In the first period, CSB’s Abby Milton (Maple Grove, Minn.) took off on a breakaway that would have changed the outcome of the game.  Milton’s powerful and precise shot was astonishingly saved by the Gusties goaltender Breanna Scavo.

Christine Wicker of Gustavus scored at 10:18 in the first when she just barely got the puck to cross the red line in the goal. Gusties next goal was by Allie Harwood off a power play. Their last goal was scored by Linda Evans with 1:02 left in the game.

CSB will reflect on what they did affectively and how they can improve on it even more for their rematch against Gustavus at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9. The game will be held at the Don Roberts Ice rink in St. Petersburg, Minn.
