The College of Saint Benedict (4-6-1 MIAC, 4-10-1) put up a great challenge against the College of St. Catherine (4-7-0 MIAC, 7-10-1) but lost 2-1 with a few minutes left in an overtime battle.
CSB’s Abbie Helminen (Brighton, Mich.) made 35 critical saves this game, but at the 2:21 mark in overtime, the tables turned. The Wildcat’s Megan Boehmer got an assist from Michaela Michaelson and ended the game.
Earlier, in the third period, Saint Benedict’s Ashley Rebeck (Saint Andrews, Canada) scored her third goal of the season with an assist from Abby Milton (Maple Grove, Minn.). This goal was what sent the Blazers into their third overtime game in a row.
The Blazers shut down both of the Wildcat’s power plays and were close behind in shots on goal with 31 to St. Kate’s 37. St. Catherine did a good job of clogging everything up and keeping things tight. This prevented the Blazers from getting to close to the net.
Saint Benedict played with conviction but they were unable to finish. CSB made many quality chances to score but St. Kate’s goaltender Mel Gerten shut down 30 of them.
CSB now has the opportunity to go against the Wildcats again on Saturday, Feb. 2 in St. Paul. The Blazers chance to get even will start at 6:30 p.m.
