Blazers Finally Breakout, 3-3

01/25/2008

The College of Saint Benedict Blazer’s (3-5-1 MIAC, 3-9-1) gripping game against Augsburg College (3-5-1 MIAC, 3-10-1) resulted in a 3-3 tie at the MAC in St. Cloud.

The Auggies caught the Blazers off guard when they scored three times from rushes. Augsburg’s unexpected goals were within the first 30 seconds of the first two periods and again in the second period with one second remaining.

The Blazers were never far behind the Auggies. They were neck and neck in shots on goal up until the third period when CSB kicked it into an even higher gear.

The Blazers finally got their break after their relentless efforts leading up to the third. At 4:31, CSB’s Stephanie Kendrick (Osceola, Wis.) scored off an assist from Maggie Rothstein (Grand Rapids, Minn.)sparking the turn of events.  Less than two minutes later, Ashley Rebeck (Saint Andrews, Canada) scored bringing the game to 2-3.

The Blazers’ momentum continued with shot after shot, when finally Saint Benedict’s Ashley Davenport (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) scored with 1:26 seconds left, tying the game and sending it into overtime.

Saint Benedict held their zone and carried their intensity into overtime but five minutes was not enough time for either team to score.

CSB ended the game on top of Augsburg 33-26 in faceoffs and 46-31 shots on goal.

Next the Blazers will continue with confidence as they will meet Augsburg again. The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 7:05 p.m. The game will be held at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
