The College of Saint Benedict Blazers went into winter break with a 3-2 winning record in the MIAC and 3-4 overall. This is contributed to the teams great dynamic and phenomenal communication on the ice.
First-years are adapting to the college pace quite quickly. Two of the Blazers’ first-year goaltenders, Amanda Plumm (Lake Elmo, Minn.) and Abbie Helminen (Brighton, Mich.), were named athlete of the week for making big saves during crucial parts of the game. Other first-year athletes account for scoring six goals and making six assists so far this season.
The Blazers’ sophomores have made a remarkable impact on the offense thus far
and have been highly effective at moving the puck. Sophomore Janae Coauette (Crookston, Minn.) scored the game winning goal in the third period against Saint Mary’s and leads the team in assists with four of them.
The junior class also displayed a lot of offensive fire power and have created many scoring opportunities. The Blazers’ juniors have been creating problems for the opposing team’s defense all season so far. Junior Stephanie Kendrick (Osceola, Wis.) is the lead returning scorer from last season and has already scored three times this season.
Seniors have showed extraordinary leadership by stepping up at the most vital times. Maggie Kinney (Woodbury, Minn.) led the Blazers to a triumphant victory over Bethel by scoring a hat trick bringing the final
score to 5-3. Ashley Davenport (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) has also been role modeling the “Blazer Way” with two goals and three assists.
Head coach Pat Michaud has brought great changes to the College of Saint Benedict’s ice hockey program. He has recruited a well rounded mix of athletes adding depth and talent to the Blazers roster. Coaching his philosophy of “No Holding Back” has evolved the Blazers into a relentless fighting force.
Overall the team has come far together this season. Special teams are looking outstanding and know how to execute. The defense is very skillful and is not giving up a lot of goals. The team looks like they have been playing together for a full season now and this is just the beginning…
