The College of Saint Benedict Blazers (3-1 MIAC, 3-3-0) defeated Bethel University (2-3 MIAC, 3-4-1) 5-3 on Friday, Dec. 7 at Schwan’s Super Rink in Blaine, Minn.
CSB’s Maggie Kinney scored her first goal at 4:16 of the first period, but 13 seconds later, Bethel’s Mary Foster tied the game 1-1. Kinney scored her second goal at 13:04 of the first, giving the Blazers a 2-1 lead going into first intermission.
Ashley Rebeck (St. Andrews, Manitoba) started off the second period at 3:03 with first her first collegiate goal for the Blazers. Patty King (St. Paul, Minn.) ended the second period with 2:56 left, scoring at even strength to make it 4-1. The Blazers out-shot the Royals in the period, 18-15.
Bethels’ Bethany Murphy scored, but then Kinney responded with a shorthanded goal. Less then a minute later, Murphy answered with another goal, this time on a power play.
Goaltenders Abbie Helminen (Brighton, Mich.) of the Blazers had 35 saves and Beth Spurrier of the Royals had 36.
The Blazers complete their series with Bethel at 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 at the MAC in St. Cloud.
