The College of Saint Benedict Blazers (2-1 MIAC, 2-3-0) defeated St. Olaf College (2-1 MIAC, 2-3-0) 3-0 Friday, Nov. 30 at the Municipal Athletic Complex.
First-year
goalie Abbie Helminen (Brighton, Mich.) shutout St. Olaf with 38 saves, including three saves off Oles' breakaways.
On the offense, Blazers’ first-year forward Holly Reinking (Maple Grove, Minn. - pictured left) scored two power-play goals in the first two periods. For Reinking’s second goal she recovered the loose puck and shot a one-timer over the left shoulder of Oles’ goalie Erin McNamara.
The Blazers' defense keep most of the shots from the outside. St. Olaf’s last attempt for a comeback started when the Blazers' Ashely Rebeck was called for interference at 16:26 of the third period. The Oles pulled
their goalie for a two person advantage over the Blazers, but CSB’s Patty King (St. Paul, Minn.) stole the puck and broke free for an empty net goal at 17:35.
Coach Pat Michaud acknowledges his approval by saying, “This is a true testament to show how hard the athletes have been working lately.”
The Blazers face Bethel at 7 p.m. on Friday, December 7 at the NSC/Schwan's Super Rink. Due to a postponement because of snow, the Blazers will finish their series against St. Olaf at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30 at the Northfield Ice Arena.
