Blazers Take Back a Win 1-0

11/17/2007

The College of Saint Benedict Blazers (1-1 MIAC, 1-3-0) came out with great intensity in the second game of their series to beat Saint Mary’s University (1-1 MIAC, 1-2-0) 1-0 Saturday, Nov. 17 to earn a split of their weekend MIAC series.

As the game went back and fourth the quality scoring opportunities stayed close with Saint Mary’s having 12 chances and Saint Benedict having 10. Blazers’ goalie Amanda Plumm (Lake Elmo, Minn.) made 21 more saves then opponent’s goalie Brittany Lemke in the end shutting out the Cardinals.

Everything remained even until 4:40 into the third period when SMU’s junior Krista Sheppard got called for interference resulting in a power play. The Cardinals having one less person on the ice was all it took for CSB’s Janae Coauette (Crookston, Minn.) to shoot and score bring the Blazers ahead by one.

Saint Benedict’s Abby Milton (Maple Grove, Minn.), with 12:17 left in the game, and Andrea Selby (Eagan, Minn.), with 11:52 left, were called for penalties giving Saint Mary’s a two person advantage and put the crowd anxiously on the edge of their seats. Blazers defense worked vigorously to keep the shots outside and were able to prevent any penetration.

Head Coach Pat Michaud commented, “This is a big win for us!” Michaud goes on to say, “It shows a lot to come back from Friday night and that really demonstrates good character and a great work ethic from the team.”

Up next the Blazers will go against former teammates in the Alumnae game at 3:45 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18 at the MAC.  Blazers’ will then host their next conference game against St. Olaf.  Face-off is set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 30 at the MAC.
