Saint Mary's Takes First MIAC Win 4-3

11/16/2007

The College of Saint Benedict women’s hockey team (0-1 MIAC, 0-3-0 overall) was defeated by Saint Mary’s University (1-0 MIAC, 1-1-0 overall) by a score of 4-3 on Friday evening in St. Cloud, Minn.  This victory gave the Cardinals their first MIAC win of the season. The Blazers were out matched, but played with grit and determination until the final horn.

Head coach Pat Michaud commented, “Saint Mary’s is a young but talented team with a great recruiting class,” and indeed they were.

Cardinals’ Ingrid Klockars kicked off the game by scoring 6:17 into the first period assisted by Hadley Swaggert.  No more then a minute later, Jill Rhody of Saint Mary’s scored and with that they owned the first period.

Less then a minute into the second, Francie Steger of Saint Mary’s got a goal off an assist from Katie Cachey and Ashley Mileykovs to put the Cardinals ahead by three. Five minutes later, Senior Maggie Kinney (Woodbury, Minn.) of the Blazers received a pass from Abby Milton (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Ashley Davenport (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) only to send the puck flying past opponents’ goalie Brittany Lemke.

The second period ended with the same point spread it started with, but the third began with three CSB first year athletes working together to change that.  Ashely Rebeck (Saint Andrews, Canada) and Holly Reinking (Maple Grove, Minn.) were in sync with teammate Gretchen Leyendecker (Rochester, Minn.) to score to bring the game to 2-3.  Then after the Cardinals returned with another point, Blazers’ top returning scorer Steph Kendrick (Osceola, Wis.) scored her first conference goal of the season.

Although the Blazers lost, they are now looking forward to finishing their series against Saint Mary’s. They will face again at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17 at Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud, Minn.
