The College of Saint Benedict (2-11-5 MIAC, 2-17-5 overall) women’s hockey team ended their season on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 loss to Concordia-Moorhead College (8-9-1 MIAC, 9-11-2 overall). The Cobbers completed the weekend sweep of the Blazers at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud, Minn. The Blazers end the season with four straight
losses, after mounting a season long unbeaten streak of three games in early February. Under first-year head coach Pat Michaud, the Blazers finish the season 2-11-5 in the MIAC. Five ties leads all MIAC teams in that category.
Prior to the game, the Blazers honored the seniors and their parents with a ceremony held at center ice. On the day that Michaud elected to start all five of the seniors, the emotions of the afternoon carried over to the play on the ice. It was perhaps the most physical game of the year. The Cobbers and Blazers combined for 16 different penalties. Each team was sent to the penalty box eight times. Off setting penalties limited the man-advantage scoring chances for either squad.
The officials were kept busy all afternoon, with shoving from both squads.
Concordia-Moorhead scored first at the 10:26 mark of the first period, from the stick of first-year Amanda Matchett (Regina, Sask./ Notre Dame). It was Matchett's first collegiate goal. The Cobbers carried a 1-0 lead into the third period, before adding a second goal from sophomore Brit Vander Kooy (Redlands,
Calif. /California Selects). Vander Kooy's goal came at the 6:33 mark of the third period. It was her first goal of the season. The Blazers only goal came with 1:46 remaining in the contest in fitting fashion. Senior captain and leading scorer Erin Baldwin (Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Park Center) netted her twelfth goal of the season, on an assist from co-captain Stephanie Gassert (Cloquet, Minn. / Cloquet). With the assist, Gassert tied a career high in assists with seven. With under a minute remaining in the contest the Blazers had an opportunity to tie the game, when Baldwin's slap-shot hit the post.
The Blazers focus shifts to next season, as Pat Michaud looks to continue to rebuild a program full of youth and
potential.
