The College of Saint Benedict (2-10-5 MIAC, 2-16-5 overall) women’s hockey team was defeated by Concordia-Moorhead College (7-9-1 MIAC, 8-11-2 overall) by a final score of 2-0 on Friday evening at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud, Minn. Despite great play from first-year goalie Erika Hartel (Manitoba, Canada / Virden Collegiate Institute), the physical play of the Cobbers held the Blazers offensive attack in check. Hartel made 29 saves on 31 shots, including some highlight real saves. Offensively it was a struggle for the Blazers, who only managed to get off 19 shots on goal.
Head coach Pat Michaud summed up his teams performance following the game, "you have to credit Concordia-Moorhead for playing a great game. They were very very physical and that really negated our speed and our scoring opportunities"
It didn’t take long for the Cobbers to get on the scoreboard. At the 7:55 mark of the first period, sophomore Alyssa Dahl (Willmar, Minn./
Willmar) put one past Blazer goalie Hartel to take a 1-0 lead. One goal would later prove to be enough for Concordia Moorhead. The Cobbers took a 1-0 lead into the second period. Less than two minutes into the start of the second period, senior Brandie Dunn (Plano, Texas / Lone Star) scored a one-timer off of the face-off. She was assisted by fellow senior teammates Joanna Berringer (Kenora, Ont./ Beaver Brae) and Paige Stone (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./ Ana. Lady). The Blazers stayed in the game until the very end. Stephanie Kendrick (Osceola, Wis. / New Richmond) led the Blazers offensive attack from the point with six shots on goal.
A scary moment came late in the game, when first-year forward Janae Coautte (Crookston, Minn./ Crookston) was checked headfirst into the boards. She was able to leave the ice under her own power with the help of the trainer.
The College of Saint Benedict women's Hockey team will finish up the season on Saturday afternoon against Concordia Moorhead College at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud, Minn. Face-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
