Women's Hockey Defeated by Gustavus 6-0

02/17/2007

On an evening when the third ranked team in the nation clinched the outright MIAC title, the College of Saint Benedict (2-9-5 MIAC, 2-15-5) women’s hockey team didn’t go down without a fight. The Gustavus Adolphus (15-1-0, 21-2-0) women's hockey team defeated the College of Saint Benedict by a final score of 6-0, on Saturday after noon in St. Peter, Minn. The victory clinched the Gusties sixth MIAC Championship in the past seven years. The Blazers played well through two peridos, as they were looking to play the role of spoiler, and improve on their 10-0 loss to Gustavus on Friday evening.

“We played hard and never quit, but we just ran out of gas there at the end”, explained head coach Pat Michaud.

The Blazers held the Gusties scoreless in the first period with the help of first-year goalie Erika Hartel (Manitoba, Canada / Virden Collegiate Institute). Hartel stopped 12 first period shots from the Gustavus sharp shooters. The Gusties got on the board at the 11:16 mark of the second period, with a goal from the stick of leading scorer Andrea Peterson (White Bear Lake, Minn. / White Bear Lake).  Peterson’s goal would eventually prove to be the game winner. The Blazers held the Gusties to only a two goal lead heading into the third period. It was in the third period that the Blazers ran out of steam. The Gusties scored four more times in the third, to put the finishing touches on a 6-0 home victory and the outright MIAC title.

The College of Saint Benedict women’s hockey team will finish off the season with a home weekend series against Concordia-Moorhead College at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud, Minn. Face-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday evening, and 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
