Blazers Fall to the Best 10-0

02/16/2007

Gustavus Adolphus College (14-1-0 MIAC, 20-2-0) showed exactly why they are ranked third in the nation, as they defeated the College of Saint Benedict (2-8-5 MIAC, 2-14-5 overall) by a final score of 10-0, Friday evening in St. Cloud, Minn. The Blazers played stretches of their best hockey, but the Gusties played nearly flawless. The Gusties ended the Blazers three-game unbeaten streak with their twentieth win of the season. The Blazers were out matched, but played with grit and determination until the final horn.

First-year head coach Pat Michaud emphasized his teams resiliency, “we never gave up, we played hard, and we played some of our best stretches of hockey this season.”

Gustavus lit the lamp only 2:26 into the first period with an unassisted goal from the swipe of first-year forward Alyssa Saunders (Wayzata, Minn. / The Blake School) The Blazers headed to the locker room trailing 4-0 after the first period, and 9-0 heading into the third period. Gustavus’ sophomores Christine Wicker (Burnsville, Minn. / Apple Valley) and Mari Gunderson (Shoreview, Minn. / Mounds View) scored two goals apiece. Gunderson was also credited with an assist in the Gusties scoring frenzy. Senior Kelly Crandall (Plymouth, Minn. /Armstrong) added a goal and two assists to cap off her three point night.

Michaud put the task of holding the Gusties at bay, in the hands of sophomore goalie Sarah Zweber (White Bear Lake, Minn. / White Bear Lake). Zweber made 27 saves, but couldn’t keep all of Gustavus shots from finding the back of the net. Zweber’s season record falls to 1-9-4.

Saturday afternoon, the College of Saint Benedict women’s hockey team will travel to Lund Arena in St. Peter, Minn. The Blazers will test their luck against the Gusties one more time. Face-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
