Stephanie Kendrick (Osceola, Wis. (New Richmond) scored the game tying goal with two seconds left in regulation for the College of Saint Benedict ( 1-7-4 MIAC, 1-13-4) women's hockey team, as the Blazers skated to a 5-5, overtime tie with Augsburg College (4-5-3 MIAC, 7-8-4) on Saturday night in Minneapolis. Captain Erin Baldwin (Brooklyn Park, Minn. /Park Center) recorded her first collegiate hat-trick, scoring three of the five Blazers goals. It was a relentless effort by the Blazers hockey team, in a game with multiple lead changes. Five goals is the most goals scored by the Blazers since their 6-6 tie against Hamline University on November 18, 2006. With the tie, the Blazers put an end to the Auggies four game winning streak.
"They never gave up, they kept a never quit attitude on the ice", first-year head coach Pat Michaud characterized his team's efforts.
Baldwin got the scoring started for the Blazers with her sixth goal of the season, coming only 16 seconds after the puck dropped. The Blazers staged a two goal lead at 5:35 mark, when junior Ashley Davenport (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) scored her second goal in as many games. Davenport's power play goal was her third goal of the season. The Auggies stormed back with three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead heading into the third period. Baldwin opened the third period with early back-to-back goals to complete the vintage hockey hat-trick. Baldwin's eight goals on the season lead the Blazers. Senior Sarah Horlitz (Rochester, Minn. / Mayo) assisted fellow senior Erin Baldwin on both third period goals. The Blazers outshot the Auggies for the second straight night by a margin of 35-33. Sarah Zweber (White Bear Lake, Minn. / White Bear Lake) started in the net for the Blazers and recorded 28 saves in the overtime scuffle.
On Friday the College of Saint Benedict women's hockey team will host the College of Saint Catherine at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud, Minn. Face-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
