Seniors Lead the Way 4-1

02/09/2007

It was a night in which the College of Saint Benedict ( 2-7-4 MIAC, 2-13-4) seniors took control of the game, scoring three of the four Blazers goals and leading them to a 4-1 victory over the College of Saint Catherine (0-12-1 MIAC, 0-18-1) on Friday night in St. Cloud, Minn.  Seniors Erin Baldwin (Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Park Center), Sarah Horlitz (Rochester, Minn. / Mayo), and Sarah Wilson (Fairmont, Minn. /Fairmont) each scored a goal in the winning effort. It was the Blazers first victory since December 2, 2006, when they escaped with a 3-2 win over St. Mary's University. For the Wildcats, their winless streak stretches to 28 games with the last night's loss. The Blazers win was only the second collegiate coaching victory for first-year head coach Pat Michaud. Michaud went with first-year goalie Erika Hartel (Manitoba, Canada / Virden Collegiate Institute), who earned her first collegiate victory against the Wildcats, and came 10:21 away from recording her first collegiate shutout.

Sophomore Patty King (St. Paul, Minn.) broke the scoring gates open at the 5:28 mark of the first period, scoring off a pass from Junior Ashley Davenport (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley). For King, it was her third goal of the season. The Blazers continued to pour it on out shooting the Wildcats 15-3 in the first period. Later in the first period the Blazers added a power-play goal from the stick of senior captain Erin Baldwin. The goal was Baldwin's team leading ninth of the season, and her fourth in the last two games. In the last two, games Baldwin has recorded four goals and two assists, including a hat-trick last Saturday at Augsburg. The Blazers scored their third goal at the 6:23 mark off a poke from senior defenseman Sarah Horlitz. Forward Sarah Wilson added the Blazers final goal with a little more then a minute remaining in the second period. Erika Hartel lost the shutout when, the Blazers backed themselves into a corner allowing the Wildcats a 5-3 power play.

Michaud emphasized prior to the game, "our seniors will need to provide the necessary energy to give us a chance to win." The seniors met that challenge from their head coach, leading the way to the Blazers second victory of the season.

On Saturday the College of Saint Benedict women's hockey team will travel to Ridder Arena in Minneapolis in search of a weekend sweep at the hands of the College of Saint Catherine. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
