The College of Saint Benedict ( 0-5-1, 0-1-1 MIAC) women's hockey team heated up late in Saturday afternoon's contest, forcing MIAC foe Hamline University (1-1-2, 0-0-1) into a scoring shootout. When the smoke had settled at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud Minnesota, the Blazers walked off the ice with a 6-6 tie in overtime. The two teams combined for 11 goals in the games final two periods. The Blazers doubled their season goal total of three, by scoring six goals in one game. Sharpshooter Andrea Selby (Eagan, Minn. / Eagan) and captain Erin Baldwin (Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Park Center) both scored two goals apiece for the Blazers, while senior captain Sephanie Gassert (Cloquet, Minn. / Cloquet) added two assists.
It was a struggle out of the gates for the Blazers, giving up the first Piper goal with only two seconds remaining in the first period. The Pipers of Hamline University took a commanding 4-0 lead in the second period, before the College of Saint Benedict found their scoring rhythm. The Blazers scored three goals in the second period, and three more in the third period to coming back from a grave deficit to tie things up. Andrea Selby put the Blazers on the board at 11:23 in the second period with her first of two goals. Selby's second goal was also the goal
that knotted things up at six apiece with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, sending the game into overtime. Goalie Sarah Zweber (White Bear Lake, Minn. / White Bear Lake) held the Pipers in check in the extra period the help the Blazers earn their first tie of the season and improve to 0-1-1 in the MIAC.
The College of Saint Benedict is idle until Dec. 1-2 when they travel south to Saint Mary's for a two game set on the road.
