The College of Saint Benedict women's hockey team dropped its season opener to the University of Wisconsin Superior by the score of 3-0 on Friday evening at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud Minnesota. The Blazers faced off against the heavily favored Yellowjackets who entered the game ranked fifth in the nation. With the loss, the College of Saint Benedict falls to a record of 0-1-0 on the young season, while UW-Superior remains unbeaten with a 4-0-0 record.
The Blazers kept the score tight by playing a physical style of hockey. The Yellowjackets managed only one goal in each of the three periods, scoring their first two goals with the power play advantage. The Yellowjackets’ third goal didn’t come until halfway through the third period, despite out shooting the Blazers by a vast margin of 37-10. Ashley Davenport (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) led the College of Saint Benedict
with three shots on goal. Sarah Zweber (White Bear Lake, Minn. / White Bear Lake) made 34 saves in the losing cause, as she tried to quiet the Yellowjackets potent offensive attack.
The Blazers will face off against the University of Wisconsin Superior tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. as they seek to salvage one game of the two game set.
