1997-1998 Season Review

The 1997-98 Blazer golf season will be remembered as a year of firsts. For example, sophomore Heather Schmitt, became the first CSB golfer to earn an appearance (was competing at the time of this printing) in the NCAA Championships, and the team posted a conference runner-up finish in the the MIAC Championships. Sixth-year head coach Theresa Solarz credits part of her team’s great and ongoing success to conditioning and weight training.

Weather conditions caused the two-day MIAC Tournament to be trimmed from 36-holes to 27-holes because of rain and high winds. CSB edged Gustavus with a total of 580, one stroke better than the Gusties, and four strokes ahead of Macalester.

The Blazers carded team and individual records throughout the fall season. CSB began the season by breaking the school record for the lowest two-day total by 12 strokes, and then shot an 18-hole low score the following week at the Concordia-Moorhead Invitational.

During the spring season, the Blazer golfers finished in third place, an improvement from fifth place in 1997, at the Minnesota Collegiate Women’s State Meet.
