Feb. 19, 2005 - Saint Ben's improved to 19-4 overall, 16-4 MIAC with this afternoon's 70-61 win over
Gustavus (14-9, 12-8 MIAC). The Blazers used a fast-paced start to get off to a 13-5 lead. Senior Kim Johnson (Arden Hills/Mounds View) scored 12 of her game-high 19 points in the first half. The Gusties came within two points, but the Blazers never allowed them to take over the lead. CSB took a 34-37 lead into halftime.
The Blazers used the first few minutes of the second half to extend their lead to double figures, going ahead by as many as 19 points. The Gusties made a good attempt at a comeback and got within four points with just under four minutes to go, but the Blazers were able to hold on for the 70-61 win.
Sophomore Katie Kempe (St. Paul, Cretin-Derham) added 13 points for the Blazers, while junior Anna Heikenen (Edina/Edina) scored 10. Despite being outrebounded 42-38 by Gustavus, Saint Ben's shot 45 percent from the field for the game. The Gusties were held to 35 percent shooting.
The number three seed Blazers will host the number six seed St. Thomas in the quarterfinals of the MIAC playoffs on Monday. The first 200 CSB/SJU students in attendance will be given free admission. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
