March 11, 2005 - The Blazers' strong postseason run came to an end tonight in the Sweet 16 round of the
NCAA Tournament where they lost to George Fox 74-69.
The Blazers led as much as 10 points in the first half of play. The Blazers began their 14-0 run at 4:30 in the first half, until the Bruins hit a free-throw and three point shot with one second remaning. Senior post Kim Johnson scored 15 of her 21 points in the first half. She was 5-for-7 from the three point line and 7-for-13 from the field.
Saint Benedict was 10-for-25 from three points, while George Fox was 11-for-31.
The Blazers shot 50 percent as a team from teh field in the first half and took a 40-34 lead into halftime. In the second half, CSB led the first 11 minutes and 27 seconds of the second half, until George Fox began to charge. The Bruins made 11-of 13 free-throw shots int he second half.
CSB cooled off in the second half, shooting just 31 percent from the field. Junior forward Anna Heikenen and sophomore guard Katie Kempe each finished the game in double digits. Heikenen was 7-for-14 from the field,
finishing with 16 points and six offensive rebounds and seven total rebounds. Kempe was 5-for-13 from the field and scored 14 points and passed out three assists.
The Blazers outrebounded the Bruins 43-32, led by Johnson who finished the game with 15 rebounds, four from the offensive side and 11 from the defense.
George Fox was led by Kim Leith who scored 25 points and was 5-for-14 from behind the three point arc. Liz Clark finished with 23 points, was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, and 5-for-10 from the three point arc.
The Blazers finish the season with a 24-5 overall record.
