February 1, 2006 - The Blazer basketball team (15-4 overall, 12-3 MIAC) defeated the St. Catherine Wildcats 89-56 in a very one sided ball game. The Blazers controlled the pace of the game from near the start. The Wildcats fought hard in the first few minutes before the Blazers grabbed hold of the game with both hands.
St. Kate's was ahead 11-10 five minutes into the game. Then first-year forward Ariel Tauer (Edina, Minn. / Edina HS) hit a short jumper to gain a 12-11 advantage and the Blazers never looked back. Tauer's shot sparked a 15-4 run that left the Wildcats helpless. The Blazers led 48-33 at halftime.
In the second half, the Blazers simply came out and took care of business. The Blazers continued their strong first half play in the new period. The Blazers outscored St. Kate's 41-23 in the second period.
The Blazers were led by the post play of senior forward Anna Heikenen (Edina, Minn. / Edina HS) and junior post Jaime Goehner (Jamestown, N.D. / Jamestown HS). Heikenen led the team with 18 points and seven rebounds. Opposite of Heikenen, Goehner added 14 points and six rebounds for Blazers. Junior point guard Katie Kempe (St. Paul, Minn. / Cretin Derham Hall) also contributed 10 points.
The Blazers are next in action on Saturday, February 3 at St. Thomas. Game time is 1 p.m.
