1998-1999 Season Review

The Saint Ben's basketball  team (28-2 overall, 21-1 MIAC champions) became the first CSB team or individual to finish in second place in the nation.  The Blazers were selected by a pair of publications; WDIII News and Columbus Multimedia, as the pre-season number one team in the nation.   CSB began the season by winning the National Catholic Tournament in impressive style, and then went on to capture their fifth MIAC championship, and their first back-to-back crown.  Under the direction of 13th year head coach Mike Durbin, CSB advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 11th straight season.  Home playoff wins over St. Thomas, DePauw (Ind.), and Pacific Lutheran, advanced Saint Ben's to the NCAA Final Four for the second time in six years.  Upon their arrival in Danbury, Conn. and Western Connecticut State University, CSB downed Salem State (Mass.) 74-54.  Then in the national championship game, Washington University (St. Louis, Mo.) ended the Blazers hopes of a championship title 74-65.  The Blazers are 53-4 overall the last two seasons.  CSB will return four of five starters next winter.
