1988-1989 Season Review

The 1988-89 College of Saint Benedict basketball season is one that will remain in the minds of Blazer athletes and fans for years to come.   In CSB's 15-year intercollegiate basketball history, no team has ever put up the lofty numbers of this squad.

Last winter's team finished the season with a 23-5 overall record and a 19-1 record in the MIAC.   With the outstanding conference record came the school's first MIAC basketball title.  The Blazers also qualified for the NCAA Division III West Regional Tournament last March, earning their first berth to a national tournament.

Nationally, CSB was fifth in field percentage (.486), seventh in free throw percentage (.718), and 12th in won/loss percentage (.797) in the final NCAA Division III rankings.

Third-year head coach Mike Durbin has compiled a 60-20 overall record and a 51-13 record in the MIAC.  He was named the MIAC "Coach of the Year."

Post Joyce Spanier, a 5-foot-8 sophomore from Belgrade, MN, was named to the Kodak District 8 team.  She was also All-MIAC and led the team in scoring with an average of 17.2 points per game and in steals with 66.   Senior point Patty Mayer, Glencoe, MN, and Mickey Jurewicz, a sophomore post from Shakopee, MN, also earned All-MIAC honors.  The honor was Mayer's second in as many years.  She led CSB in steals and three-point shooting.  Mayer is the college's career leader in assists (510).  Jurezicz led the squad in field goal percentage (.538) and in rebounding (7.9 rpg).
