1987-1988 Season Review

 

Saint Benedict's basketball team's 20-6 overall record and 17-5 MIAC record w3ere the best records in the school's 14-year basketball history.  The squad finished third in the conference behind Concordia, the NCAA Division III national champions, and St. Thomas.  The Blazers were ranked sixth in the final NCAA Division III West Region poll.

Second-year head coach Mike Durbin has turned the Blazer basketball program toward success.  In just tow seasons, Durbin's squads have compiled a 37-15 (.721) overall and a MIAC record of 32-12 (.727).

Leading the way for the Blazers last winter was Kim Krize, a senior post from Biwabik, MN.  Krize led the squad in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 16.6 points and 11.0 rebounds per game.  She became the school's all-time leading scorer and rebounder with 1, 149 career points and 799 career rebounds.  Krize also led the Blazers in free throw shooting and was ranked 12th in the nation in free throw accuracy, connecting on 82.6 percent of her free throw shots.   Krize was selected to the All-MIAC team for the third straight season and was voted most valuable player by her teammates for the third straight season.

Patty Mayer, a junior from Glencoe, MN, earned All-MIAC honors and was voted the team's most improved player.  Mayer was ranked seventh in three-point shooting accuracy in the final NCAA Division III rankings.   Freshman Joyce Spanier, Belgrade, MN, seniors Pam Eaton, New Prague, MN, and Mary Fisher, Soldotna, Alaska, all earned honorable mention All-MIAC honors.  Lori Eiselt, a sophomore from Madelia, MN, was voted the team's most improved junior varsity player.
