The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (9-3 MIAC, 11-4 overall) was defeated 49-34 by the Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers. After defeating St. Thomas on Jan. 21, the Blazers extended their longest winning streak of the year to eight games. CSB attempted to add one more to their streak, but the Cobbers had different plans for the game at Memorial Auditorium in Moorhead, Minn. The Blazers were led in scoring by first-year post Danielle Frank (Caledonia, Minn./Caledonia High School) with 12 points. Frank also contributed eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
The first few minutes of the game were similar to most CSB basketball games. However, after a few minutes of play, it was obvious that this game was a rarity – the Blazers could not seem to put a string of back-to-back baskets together. By halftime, the Cobbers had gained a 28-15 lead. The second half started with CSB missing its first 15 field goal attempts. This was overwhelming evidence that this was not a normal performance by the Blazers, who were tied for the conference lead entering the game.
Despite their best efforts, the Blazers were unable to overcome their offensive difficulties as they shot 25.5 from the field for the game. Fortunately, CSB never let the game out of hand as they also held Concordia to a slightly better 30.8 team field goal percentage. First-year post Heather Gillund (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine High School) added six points and six rebounds in an attempt to spark the Blazer offense. Junior forward Ariel Tauer (Edina, Minn./Edina High School) tried to do the same as she dished out a game-high four assists.
The Blazers will take on Saint Mary’s at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 in Winona, Minn.
