Blazers Overcome Tough Shooting Performance

01/19/2008

The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (8-2 MIAC, 10-3 overall) defeated the Hamline Pipers 64-54. The Blazers traveled to St. Paul to take on the Pipers in the final game of their three-game road trip. Sophomore wing Mindy Schmidt (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park High School) scored a team-high 15 points. Schmidt made 8 of 8 free throws, all of which came in the second half.

The Pipers and Blazers battled back and forth nearly the entire first half. Neither team was able to pull ahead by more than three points until three and a half minutes remaining in the half. At that point, CSB went on a 6-0 run to grab the first substantial advantage of the game. The Blazers went into halftime up 27-23. In the first six minutes of the second period, CSB built up a 10-point lead, the biggest of the game. The Blazers never relinquished the lead and won by the same margin.

Despite shooting only 29.6 percent from the field, CSB was able to battle through and gain the victory. Junior forward Ariel Tauer (Edina, Minn./Edina High School) scored 12 points on 5 of 7 shooting to boost the Blazers. CSB also recorded a season-high 53 team rebounds. First-year post Danielle Frank (Caledonia, Minn./Caledonia High School) was the largest contributor with a career-high 18 rebounds. Frank also chipped in 10 points.

The Blazers are next in action at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 21 when they take on St. Thomas at home in Claire Lynch Hall.
