The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (7-2 MIAC, 9-3 overall) defeated the St. Catherine Wildcats 73-45. The Blazers hit the floor running and the Wildcats never quite caught up. First-year post Danielle Frank (Caledonia, Minn./Caledonia High School) won the tip-off and less than 30 seconds later scored the first basket of the game. From that point on, CSB never let go of the lead on their way to a 28-point victory. Like the Blazers, Frank started quickly and played hard throughout the game. Frank finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds – her third double-double in the last five games.
After scoring on the first possession of the game, CSB continued by jumping out to a 13-3 lead in the first six minutes of play. For the next ten minutes, St. Catherine matched the Blazers 13-13, but still trailed 26-16 in the game. In need of another boost, the CSB defense kicked in and did not allow the Wildcats to score for the remaining four minutes of the half. Meanwhile, the Blazers posted a 9-0 run that gave them a 35-16 advantage at halftime. Starting the second half, the pace had been set and CSB kept up while St. Catherine continued to fall behind.
The Blazer turned around a rough shooting night – just 36.5 percent from the field – by scoring 73 points, a mark they have surpassed only three other times this season. To remedy the offensive troubles, CSB’s defense stepped up by holding the Wildcats to a 27.3 percent shooting performance on the night. For the Blazers, senior forward Judy Falvey (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville High Schoool) and first-year wing Laura Canton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island High School) matched Frank with exactly 10 points apiece.
The Blazers will take on Hamline at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 in St. Paul.
