Blazers Outrebound Scots, Hold On to Win

01/09/2008

The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (5-2 MIAC, 7-3 overall) defeated the Macalester Scots 62-49 at home. Even though the Scots have never won a basketball game in Claire Lynch Hall, they put up quite a fight. Despite ball handling troubles throughout the game, CSB was able to maintain control of the pace with its defense and rebounding. The Blazers were led in scoring by junior forward Ariel Tauer (Edina, Minn./Edina High School) with 15 points. Tauer shot 6 of 9 from the field and also added four boards and three assists.

Macalester was not afraid of the Blazers, and it showed. The Scots forced CSB into five turnovers in the first four minutes of play and 11 turnovers before halftime. The Blazers overcame their turnovers by making 61. percent of their field goal attempts in the first half. Due to its great shooting efficiency, CSB went into the half with a 32-19 advantage. In the second half, Macalester continued to pressure Blazer ballhandlers, but CSB persevered. The Blazers followed up their first half shooting efforts by hitting 57.9 percent of their field goals in the second period.

An even greater success for the Blazers was the fact that they out rebounded the Scots 31-15 in the game.  Macalester’s Trina PaStarr and Ann Baltzer are currently No. 3 and No. 5 in the MIAC in rebounding.  Together they average 18.2 boards per game, but the Blazers held them to just seven rebounds. The efforts to secure rebounds translated into many extra possessions for CSB. Also helping to gain additional possessions were first-year post Danielle Frank (Caledonia, Minn./Caledonia High School) and senior wing Mackenzie O’Neil (Waseca, Minn./Waseca High School). Frank finished the game with five blocked shots and nine rebounds. O’Neil contributed with four steals as well.

The Blazers will take on Augsburg at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12 in Minneapolis.
