The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (2-2 MIAC, 4-3 overall) defeated the Clarke College Crusaders 75-45 in a non-conference game before it takes a break for the holidays. After traveling approximately six hours to Dubuque, Iowa, nearly every Blazer made a contribution of some sort. Eighteen players recorded minutes in what turned out to be a very one-sided contest. The Blazers were led in scoring by first-year wing Joelle Waytashek (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial High School) with 13 points, all of which were scored in the first half.
Behind Waytashek’s offense, the Blazers had a “really great first half,” Coach Mike Durbin said. CSB accumulated a 44-21 lead after twenty minutes of play. The second half was more of the same as the Blazers continued to control the pace of the game. CSB out-rebounded the Crusaders 46-31 in the game. The Blazers also forced Clarke into 26 turnovers. The extra possessions translated into 27 points off of turnovers and 16 points off of offensive rebounds for CSB. The Blazer offense was sparked, in part, by senior wing Mackenzie O’Neil’s (Waseca, Minn./Waseca High School) four steals.
Without an individual standout performance, it was the Blazer bench that collectively stole the show. First-year wing Amy Stifter (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) led the charge with 10 points from the backcourt. The Blazer bench, which featured eight first-year players, outscored Clarke’s reserves 49-7.
The Blazers have a few weeks off for the holidays. They are next in action at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5 when they play Bethel in Claire Lynch Hall.
