Knights Hang On to Defeat Blazers

12/03/2007

The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (3-2 overall, 2-1 MIAC) was defeated 64-61 by the Carleton Knights. The preseason selections for the No. 1 and No. 2 spot in the conference met in Northfield, Minn. Despite it being only three games into to MIAC regular season, this game had a definite playoff mentality. This should have come as no surprise for the Blazers and Knights, both of whom are atop the conference standings nearly every year and have a celebrated postseason history with each other.

In true playoff fashion, this contest was not decided until the final buzzer sounded. A back-and-forth first half ended in a 28-26 Blazer lead. The second period was a similar battle until Carleton grabbed a seven-point advantage, the greatest separation either team created throughout the contest. Six tied-scores, nine lead changes, and no double-digit deficits resulted in a last minute spectacle. The Blazers made a surge and pulled within three points, but came up just shy of the Knights as regulation expired.

The Blazers were led in scoring by sophomore Mindy Schmidt (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park High School) with 14 points. Senior wing Judy Falvey (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville High School) was second with 12 points; she also grabbed seven rebounds. First-year post Danielle Frank (Caledonia, Minn./Caledonia High School) matched Falvey’s seven boards and recorded all three of CSB’s blocked shots in the game.

The Blazers are next in action at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5 when they take on Gustavus in St. Peter, Minn.
