The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (1-0 MIAC, 2-1 overall) defeated the Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers 79-71 in the 2007-08 home opener in Claire Lynch Hall. Tonight’s game was also the first contest in this season’s MIAC regular season schedule. The Cobbers started strong and posted a good shooting percentage, but they could not hold off the explosive Blazer offense. Sophomore wing Mindy Schmidt (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park High School) and first-year wing Joelle Waytashek (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial High School) led the charge with 16 points each for CSB.
Tonight’s contest started as most between the Blazers and Cobbers do, neck-to-neck. It was Concordia who gained the first advantage and built a seven point lead halfway through the first period. The CSB deficit quickly diminished as the Blazer offense heated up. CSB gained a five point lead going into the half. The beginning of the second period was more of the same as the teams tried to gain momentum. With 12 minutes remaining in the game, Waytashek rattled off nine of her 16 points in a five minute span that stretched the Blazer lead to 20. CSB coasted to the finish and earned an eight-point victory in
the MIAC opener.
Schmidt finished the game 7 of 7 from the free throw line and 4 of 7 from the field to compile her 16 points. Waytashek was 6-for-9 from the field. As a team, the Blazers recorded a .520 field goal percentage and .885 free throw percentage. Junior point guard Nikki Carter (Edina, Minn./Edina High School) and senior wing Mackenzie O’Neil (Waseca, Minn./Waseca High School) also contributed strong offensive performances. Carter and O’Neil tallied 13 and 11 points respectively.
The Blazers are next in action at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1 when they take on St. Mary’s at home in Claire Lynch Hall.
