The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (2-2 overall, 1-0 MIAC) took on the Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers (2-1 overall, 0-1 MIAC) to begin the MIAC regular season. This game featured the number one and two seeds in the MIAC standings at the end of
last season. This match up was expected to be an exceptional showing of talent and teamwork on both sides of the court. There was a great deal of both, however, it was mainly one sided. The Blazers defeated the Cobbers 72-54 in a contest that seemed to be decided within minutes of the tip-off. CSB went on runs of 14-0 and 11-0 in the first half as they built up a 40-14 lead going into halftime.
The Blazers were led by senior point guard Katie Kempe (St. Paul, Minn. / Cretin-Derham Hall) who scored 18 points on six three-pointers, including a four-of-four three-point shooting performance in the first half. Her six makes behind the arc tie for second most
three-pointers made in a single game in CSB history. Sophomore forward Ariel Tauer (Edina, Minn. / Edina HS) contributed 12 points and eight rebounds to the effort. First-year Mindy Schmidt (Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Champlin Park HS) also added 10 points. The Blazers shot 41.1 percent from the field, including 40 percent from three-point range. CSB also hit 18 of 19 free throws and had 11 players score in the game.
Although Kempe's three-pointers and the Blazer's offensive efficiency was impressive, it was their
outstanding defense that really made the difference in the game. It was the 24 forced turnovers, 15 steals, and Concordia's 21.7 first half field goal percentage that truly told the story of the game. With senior wing Jen Dalhed (Apple Valley, Minn. / Apple Valley HS) locking up Concordia's Annie Keeley and the collective post effort to shut down Melanie Hageman, the Blazers held the duo, which was averaging 40.5 points per game, to just 11 in this contest.
The Blazers are next in action at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2 when they travel to Winona, Minn. to take on Saint Mary's University.
