Bennies-
Michelangelo once said, “The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.” My name is Kristal Sawatzke, and a current sophomore I have completed nearly two years at Saint Ben’s and believe that it is a nurturing environment for aspiring young women. Saint Ben’s develops young leaders with initiative, with goals, with ingenuity, and with pride. CSB has offered generations of Bennies with countless opportunities to develop full potential, not an environment where we “achieve our mark.” Knowing full well that I am amidst some of the brightest and most talented women Saint Ben’s has ever known, it is with pride today that I strive to jump past my “mark” and aim for a higher goal, one that I have no doubt will provide me with a plethora of learning experiences, life-long skills, and knowledge so far unknown. Today, I appeal to you, Bennies, to allow me to reach my full potential by running for the Upperclass Representative.
Some characteristics I believe I possess that would be beneficial to the student population as well as the Senate include my ambition, dedication, time-management, and experiences that have shaped me as the person I am today. I am a communication major, and on campus, I am involved in the Peer Resource Program in which I have volunteered my time planning and facilitating events for CSB/SJU students as well as outside groups in the community. Through my role as a PRP, I have gained the initiative to meet with various administrations, the confidence to facilitate challenge courses and events, and learned the importance of dedication and time management. In addition, this past semester I was the Public Relations Assistant for the Saint Ben’s Senate which spawned my interest in getting more involved on campus and in the community through running for Senate.
My time at Saint Ben’s has been an incredible journey full of learning experiences, a commonality I imagine for most Saint Ben’s students. Because of mine and fellow Bennies' experiences, I am incredibly interested in representing the junior and senior classes for the Saint Ben’s Senate, along with any concerns, praises, or goals that they may have. As a liaison between the students and Senate I would communicate any issues that may arise. The beauty of this position is the possibility of the unknown. Every class is different, with their own aspirations and concerns, leaving this next year one of wonder. I wonder what the position may present, but I am confident in my skills that I can be a positive representative for the upperclass.
Due the skills mentioned prior, along with my sheer interest and ambition for the position, I believe that I would be an asset to the Saint Ben’s Senate as well as the student population. “The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.” I am aiming high, but have full confidence in myself; I will not achieve my mark if you, Bennies, allow me to represent you.
Thank you and I urge all of you to aim high and reach your full potential!
