Apartment Life

There are some major differences between living in a residence hall and living in a campus apartment or house.  Here are a few:

1. You have a kitchen now, and if you want it to be functional, you have to fill it with equipment such as pots and pans, silverware, cups, bowls, plates, Tupperware, and any appliances you might use like a microwave or coffee pot.

2. It's time to be more independent.  Now it's your job to make sure there is food in the pantry and milk in the fridge.  Grocery shopping will soon become a new sport; you'll soon find out who's a coupon-clipper and who isn't.

3. There's a lot more space to keep clean.  You'll have to divide up the sometimes daunting tasks of cleaning the bathroom(s), the kitchen and the family room.  There's dusting, vacuuming, sweeping and mopping all to be done!

4. You have to buy your own toilet paper.  My advice to you is to just pay the extra dollar and get the good stuff. It will last longer.

5. You now have more roommates than probably ever before!  Make sure that you communicate clearly with one another about issues like personal vs. shared space, visitors, and sharing the responsibility of chores.  These are the top three issues that drive roommate conflicts in the campus apartments and houses.

6. Make sure to coordinate shower times with your roommates as well as laundry times if you live in Luetmer.

7. Have fun with your apartment!  Now that you have more space, you can really make it yours!  Don't put holes in the walls but do enjoy personalizing your new place!
