An athletic coach is a professional who can work with all age groups and all levels of athletes. Coaches need to understand basic sport nutrition, emergency care, sport psychology, physical development, effective strength and training techniques. Coaches also need to be good instructors, teaching athletes about proper sport technique, strategies, character and good sportsmanship. Coaches need to be organized and understand their legal responsibilities for providing a quality program for each athlete. A coach needs to develop leadership in his/her athletes as well as promote self-esteem by running a program that is fun, focuses on proper physical and mental development and is successful. Youth organizations, schools and community programs are in dire need of qualified, energetic and enthusiastic coaches.
