The Physical Education Department recognizes the importance of exercise and physical activity in improving quality of life and in decreasing risk of disease and injury. In order for individuals, including those pursuing careers in health care, fitness, and coaching, to address complex issues related to exercise and physical activity, they must be able to apply knowledge from a wide variety of disciplines. The mission of the Physical Education Department is to provide the student a broad-based multidisciplinary education in the areas of coaching and sports medicine. This multidisciplinary approach integrates perspectives from the biological sciences, natural sciences and social sciences. Consistent with the Coordinate Mission of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University, the Department seeks to foster integrated learning, to develop skills necessary for lifelong learning, to explore issues of gender, and to provide leadership and service opportunities for students.
