What to Expect

Flights

Flights can cost anywhere from $800-$1000 or above, depending on gas prices.

Projects

There are a number of short term projects the group can chose from.  This depends on the group's fundraising and their own interests.

Weather

It is usually hot and humid in the area, but weather can be anything from frequent rain to being totaly dry.

Dress

It is best to wear light cotton clothes.  Women should dress so as to not attract too much attention, especially while working with kids or visiting homes and neighborhoods.

Food

The basic food of the area is rice, beans, salad, and some sort of meat such as chicken, beef, or pork.  You can bring dry food, peanut butter, and other items to supplement.  There is a lot of tropical fruit such as pineapple, bananas, oranges, and passionfruit.  Popular foods are plantains and roots such as the yucca.  Local bread is inexpensive but not very nutritious.  There are a lot of foreign and local cheeses.

Housing

You will either stay at Casa Paz, the volunteer house, or an alternate guest house.

Beaches

There are beaches within walking distance and the water is always good for swimming.  They have some of the best beaches in the Caribbean.  Make sure to bring a lot of sunscreen and drink a lot of bottled water.

Excursions

There is an opportunity for an exursion into another part of the Dominican Republic.
