(Ashleigh Leitch at the Democratic National Convention)
In the fall 2007 issue of Saint Benedict's magazine, we introduced sophomore Ashleigh Leitch in a story about residential life on campus. Since then, Ashleigh has been on a whirlwind educational experience that truly epitomizes the depth and breadth of transformation at Saint Ben's because of the campaign.
In one year, this senior from Willmar:
Is Ashleigh a typical Bennie? We like to think so, especially with the nationally-recognized education for women provided at Saint Ben's and the generous support of donors who help make these opportunities a reality.
Following graduation, Ashleigh went to India to teach and volunteer for six months.
Go, Ashleigh!
We understand the College of Saint Benedict, not as a place, but as an experience that sustains us throughout life. Thanks to the generous support of more than 17,600 donors, that experience has been transformed.
Sept. 8, 2008, Saint Ben's announced the conclusion of its historic capital campaign, Our Place in the World: A Campaign to Inspire and Transform. Nearly three times the amount of any previous campaign was raised, $82.7 million, prior to the June 30, 2009, target completion date.
The following highlights significant achievements on campus. Or, you can view the transformation on YouTube.
The most obvious transformation is in the visible identity of campus. Renner House and the Gorecki Dining and Conference Center offer new space to showcase our Benedictine values of community, hospitality, and listening.
The award-winning expansion and renovation of the Benedicta Arts Center offer an open invitation to explore the arts. Whether participating in public events, coursework, or simply passing through, soaring windows and vast creative spaces encourage engagement.
Finally, expanded fitness and recreational facilities provide state-of-the-art exercise equipment, a sports lab, and a yoga studio for wellness.
Learning at a premier liberal arts institution only begins in the classroom. Gifts to support service learning, research, international and domestic internships as well as lectures, conferences, and residencies help bring theory to life through practical application.
The Center for Global Education increases opportunities for students, faculty, and the college to engage with the wider world through research, internships, and partnerships.
The Koch Chair in Catholic Thought and Culture and Professorship in Education allow for renewed pedagogy and greater public outreach through conferences and lectures.
Finally, new academic fellowships encourage students to take leading roles on campus and in the public sector through the Intercultural Leadership, Education and Development program and the Marie and Robert Jackson Fellowships in civic engagement.
More than 92% of Saint Ben's students receive aid for their education. Most say they wouldn't be able to attend Saint Ben's without it. Scholarship gifts to the endowment and Annual Giving Program will help ensure access to the Saint Ben's experience for students who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, school and community involvement.
