Thoughts from Michelle… “When I was in high school, we were required to contribute 50 hours each year to any non-profit organization of our choosing. At the time, I thought that "forced volunteering" was contradictory, but I ended up really liking the experiences I had. Despite my grumbling, I even doubled my service hours a couple of semesters! At St. Ben's, I considered volunteering as a part of my contribution for the wonderful experience I was having there. I knew that I was privileged to go to such a great place, and also knew that many others couldn't even dream of a college education. I volunteered my time in a variety of ways, and learned that I could meet new people, get my hands dirty, and do something good all at the same time. The most enjoyable way I engaged in service at St. Ben's was through Alternative Spring Break. I miss not being able to participate in something like that now! After I finished graduate school, I realized that something was lacking when I wasn't giving back. The strongest connections I've ever made in my life have been through St. Ben's, so it seemed only natural that I would invest some of my time there. Several years ago, the Twin Cities Alumni Chapter hosted an event through Rebuilding Together and it was great to volunteer with fellow alums! Over the years, I've participated on Career Services' panels, helped with first-year move-in day, been a part of the Alumnae Council, and acted as a liaison for other alums to get connected with Twin Cities volunteer opportunities. I love that two of my passions--St. Ben's and service--can walk hand-in-hand through a variety volunteer opportunities both on-campus on off….”
