Gender Roles in Scandinavia

May 13th, 2013 - May 24th, 2013

Program Overview:

This program is designed to study and analyze the views of gender and positions of women in societies that differ from the United States. The first four days of the trip are spent in Stockholm Sweden, the next three in Oslo, Norway, and the last four in Copenhagen, Denmark. These countries have been democracies for hundreds of years and have very forward views and policies regarding gender and women. Time in all of these countries will be spent meeting with local citizens. They will vary from university students to women in politics and business. In addition, visits will also be planned to varying organizations and NGOs focused on gender and women's equality. City tours, sightseeing time and trips to the fjords of Norway are also scheduled into the trip.

Course Overview:

This course will begin in the Spring of 2013. Participants will attend a number of pre-orientation sessions and reading discussions to help them understand the political and social situtations in these countries. Required readings and group research projects will be assigned to help students engage in discussions to be better prepared for this trip. Participants will earn two (2) Gender and Intercultural Learning credits for this course and trip. In addition, students will be asked to keep a journal during the trip, write a reflection paper and create a final project that brings the experience back to campus to share with other students, and help maintain a blog through the IWL about the trip.
