Programs

The Sister Nancy Hynes Institute for Women's Leadership seeks to encourage women's leadership development though our programs and events. Learn more about select topics concerning gender and women's issues, challenge yourself to try to new things and see different perspectives, and get involved! 2012 Women As Global Leaders Delegation at Mosque in Abu Dhabi

In addition to these programs, we also have many diverse events throughout the year.

January 26th: Women and Money, 5:00 - 6:00p.m.                                                                                            
Linda Mielke will be helping CSB students learn important life - skills and helpful hints about financing and budgeting. Linda works at Thrivent Financial in Buffalo, Minnesota and is excited to come and share her skills with women who want to learn how to manage their money like a pro.

January 26th: Girl's Night In - "She's the Man", IWL, 9:00 p.m.
 What would you do in order to be treated fairly?  Come and join the IWL for a showing of "She's the Man," and a discussion about gender stereotypes and what happens when you step outside those stereotypes.

January 28th: Women's Climbing Clinic, SJU Climbing Wall, 11:00 - 1:00 p.m.
Test your limits or expand them at the SJU Climbing Wall!  Come to learn new techniques and advance your climbing skills in the company of other beautiful Bennies!  OLC staff will also be available for any assistance.

February 5th: Hike through the Arboretum!, 10:30 a.m.
Have you been outside lately?  Come spend a relaxed Sunday hiking through the beautiful Arboretum. Bring your camera so you can capture the beauty of winter.  It might be chilly outside, but you'll be feeling warm and fuzzy while you drink hot cocoa with other Bennies!
 
February 9th: Lunch with a Leader: Anne-Marie Slaughter, IWL Office, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.
Join the IWL in a lunch and conversation with Dr. Anne-Marie Slaughter!  Anne-Marie Slaughter is the Bert G. Kerstetter '66 University Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University.  From 2009 to 2011 she served as Director of Policy Planning for the United States Department of State, the first woman to hold that position. Prior to her  government service, Dr. Slaughter was the Dean of Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs from 2002 to 2009. She has  written/edited six books, and over 100 articles. She received a BA from Princeton, an M.Phil and D.Phil in international relations from Oxford, where she was a Daniel M. Sachs Scholar, and a J.D. from Harvard.
 
February 9th: Renaissance Series with Anne-Marie Slaughter,  7:00 p.m.
Come and listen to Anne-Marie give a talk on, "Women & Foreign Policy: How Women-Centric Policy Benefits Us All."  Anne-Marie Slaughter is the first woman to hold the position of Director of Policy Planning.  She has exceeded expectations and made her mark among women leaders today.  Be inspired and expand your knowledge with this inspiring female role model.
 
February 9th, 16th and 23rd "Unhooked" Reading Group, 4:30-6:00 p.m.
Join the IWL and Professor Kari-Shane Davis Zimmerman in a reading group on the book Unhooked, by Laura Sessions Stepp. This book explores the hook-up culture of college, how this new culture is replacing dating, and the impact it has on women's lives. Email the IWL if interested, as spots are limited!

February 10th: Slam Poet - Cristin O'Keefe, 7:00 p.m.
Come hear the nationally known slam poet, Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz!  Cristin will perform her raw and authentic poetry concerning what it is like to be a slam poet simultaneously navigating the academic world as a woman.

February 23rd: Leadership Competence in the Professional World, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
"There's no good no bad, There's no right no wrong, . . . You is what you is!" Seeing yourself and others through a different lens.
Senior Bennies, please join Maribeth Overland (mo) and the IWL for a free dinner and a life-changing discussion on your leadership style and others' leadership styles and how they can work more effectively together to achieve mutual goals.  Become knowledgeable and aware of how your style impacts and relates to others' styles in the professional world!
Space is limited to 20 seniors. First come, first serve basis. Please email the IWL back to reserve your spot and dinner!

March 1st: Girl's Night In - "The Help", IWL Office, 9:00 p.m.
Join the IWL in watching "The Help", a movie about a white woman named Skeeter who attempts to write a book about the treatment and experiences of black maids in Mississippi.  A discussion on the intersection of gender and race will follow.  Popcorn will be provided.

March 13th: "Dear World...", 9:00 a.m.
How would you finish this sentence? What do you think makes women unique? Come write a short note telling the world what you love about being a woman. Stop by Gorecki Fireside, jot down a quick note, and display it for the world to see!

March 14th: Women in the Media, 7:00 p.m.
Have you ever felt that you cannot live up to the beauty standards outlined by the media and advertising industries?  Come participate in a discussion about these standards and what we can do to change them.

March 15th: A lot to see about Vitamin C, 1:00 p.m.
Come be scientific!  Join us for a lab focusing on Vitamin C with Nutrition professor Alexa Evenson.  Not only will you get hands-on lab experience, but you will also learn how to make improved food choices related to Vitamin C content.

March 15th: Open Mic Night, 7:30 p.m.
Spit. Speak. Slam.  Join the IWL and the Intercultural Center for a great evening.  We invite you to read, perform, or just enjoy each others' talents.  Help us kick-off Women's month the right way!

March 20th: "The Bro Code", 7:00-10:00 p.m.
Are men raised to be sexist?  Join the IWL in the showing of the documentary, "The Bro Code: How Contemporary Culture Creates Sexist Men". To follow, a great discussion led by Shane Miller of the Communication Department.

2012 Women's Month Keynote Speaker

March 21st: Keynote Speaker Dr. Tererai Trent, 7:00 p.m.
Ever thought you had an unachieveable dream?  Ever had someone tell you you cannot do something?  So has Dr. Tererai Trent.  Trent grew up in rural Zimbabwe where she was denied education because she was a girl.  But she persevered and overcame adversity to reach her dreams.  She now helps girls in Southern Africa do the same.  Come listen to her inspirational story and be inspired yourself.

March 22nd: Natural Beauty Day
Pick up your Natural Beauty Day shirt from the IWL office on Wednesday, March 21.  Take on the challenge of going make-up free on Thursday.  Show the campus and the world your unique, untouched beauty.

March 23rd: Lunch with a Leader: Dr. Kay Wolsborn, IWL Office, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Dr. Kay Wolsborn was the first female Political Science professor at the College of Saint Benedict.  Join her for lunch and learn about her leadership experiences.  Lunch will be provided by the IWL.

March 27th: PostSecret Project, 7:00-9:00 p.m.
In collaboration with CSB Residential Life's VOICE campaign, the IWL will be providing postcards and materials to decorate for the PostSecret project.

March 28th: "Letters to Women Soldiers", 5:00-7:00 p.m.
 Women soldiers are often overlooked in the military.  Join the IWL and the ROTC in Gorecki and write a thank you note to a woman soldier.  Let them know that we appreciate their hard work.

March 29th: Burqa Ban, 7:00-9:00 p.m.
In April 2011, France banned the wearing of the Burqa in public.  Join the IWL, Amnesty International and the French Department in a discussion on the effect this has on Muslim women and on women's rights as a whole.

Women on the Wall

March 31st: Iron Bennie Duathlon
Come challenge yourself in a dynamic and supportive environment as you compete with other Bennies for the very first IRON BENNIE title!  Form a team or compete solo.  Stay fit, test your limits and enjoy some friendly competition!

April 13: Frisbee on Friday, 5-7 p.m.
Get moving and come outside!  Join us on the CSB Mall for a pick-up game of Ultimate Frisbee!  Never played Frisbee before?  Don't worry, we'll fill you in!  Can't catch an object to save your life?  No fear, we'll have snacks!

April 17: International CSB Women Panel, 7-9 p.m.
How far away are you from home? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be an international student on the CSB campus? Come and find out. Listen to panel of extraordinary and diverse CSB women as they share their stories and experiences about being an international student.

April 17: Dumb Blonde Discussion, 7:00 p.m.
Do you let your hair color define you? Do others judge you based on your hair color? Come and join in on a discussion about why blonds have been defined as "dumb" by their hair color, and how this has permeated American culture in the form of jokes.

April 29: Climbing at the Quarries, 12:00-3:00 p.m.
Come test your limits!  Explore the granite faces at the Quarries with other Bennies, trusty belayers from the OLC and Women's Expeditions!
