A world class education is only possible with world class faculty. Our faculty are thought leaders and innovators in their respective fields, but what makes them stand apart is their unparalleled commitment to supporting and fostering relationships with students.
It is this commitment to students that won Don Fischer, associate professor of exercise science and sports studies, 2016's S. Mary Grell Teacher of Distinction Award. In his tenure at CSB/SJU, Don has mentored 55 student research projects and moderated 23 internships as well as supporting student presentations at research conferences. Students praise Fischer for his ability to challenge and inspire students to think critically. "What makes Don an excellent professor, rather than just a good professor, is his ability to connect with students," a former student said.
In the most recent senior survey, nearly nine in 10 Saint Ben's students report that a professor served as a mentor or role model, and more than 95 percent report a favorable relationship with the faculty. We see these results year after year. Our students and faculty collaborate on research projects. They engage in lively debate in and out of the classroom. They develop rapport built on mutually held high expectations.
