The Cornerstone

The CSB/SJU Core Curriculum is a cornerstone to the liberal arts education our students receive.  The Core Curriculum applies to any student enrolled in CSB/SJU prior to the fall of 2007.  Students who matriculated in Fall 2007 or later follow the requirements of the Common Curriculum

  • The curriculum provides a coherent, flexible program that complements the First-Year Symposium and Senior Seminar components of our traditional core curriculum.
  • It responds to the needs of our students.
  • It addresses major issues in a balanced manner that builds on the strengths of the current College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University programs.

The core requirements refer to courses rather than credits because the focus is on the course guidelines and on the variety of ways the guidelines can be met. Faculty members are encouraged to be creative in designing courses that respond to the guidelines, thereby providing students greater flexibility in planning their academic programs. The term "course" is used to mean an extensive academic experience (e.g., three-credit courses, four-credit courses, Summer-term courses.)
