You can work with a clinician to explore your concerns and work towards a better understanding and resolution of your difficulties. Your first appointment will be focused on exploring your presenting concerns and gathering information related to your reasons for seeking counseling. Subsequent sessions are generally not as structured as this first appointment. The total number of sessions will vary depending on the issue(s) you bring to counseling. At times, your clinician may ask you to complete a psychological test or inventory as an aide to your work in counseling.
Workshops are typically one to four sessions in length and are educational in nature. They can focus on a variety of life management issues and are useful in both promotion of healthier lifestyle choices and fostering awareness of mental health issues. Workshops are often offered to the entire campus community, but may also be appropriate for specific groups on campus such as athletic teams, residence halls or other campus groups and organizations. Workshops, videotapes, and information files on alcohol and other drugs are available for students, faculty, and staff. Opportunities are provided to clarify personal values regarding non-use, moderate use, and abuse of alcohol and other drugs.
Staff members are available to assist people who are concerned about their use of alcohol or other drugs, those who are concerned about someone else’s use, and those who are referred by someone who is concerned about their use. Substance abuse screenings help students determine the nature and extent of their alcohol or other drug use, and the impact of this use on their well being. Counseling and Health Promotion professional staff offer recommendations and referrals for concerns identified during these substance abuse screenings. Professional staff also maintain consultative relationships with local chemical dependency treatment agencies to facilitate referrals for chemical use evaluations, as well as referrals for outpatient and inpatient chemical dependency treatment.
