Lessons in Entrepreneurship

People who start a business often say it’s what they learned after everything they learned in school that makes the difference between the success or failure of their company. What the Center does is reverse that comment by ensuring what students learn and experience while in college is what makes them successful in the future.

The Donald McNeely Center for Entrepreneurship is an entrepreneurship education resource that provides classes, coaching and assistance to entrepreneurs.  It builds relationships among and between CSB/SJU students, faculty, alumnae/i, and community members to create and strengthen the entrepreneurial spirit.

Donald McNeely, Inspirational Founder, 1914-2009
Donald McNeely, aged 94, passed away March 9th, 2009.  He was the inspirational founder of the Donald McNeely Center for Entrepreneurship and a frequent advisor for staff and students.  He will be greatly missed.  For his life story.

Eric Rego, member of the First E-Scholars Cohort, passed away December, 2009
Eric Rego was an actimve member of the first E-Scholars cohort and a volunteer for the Center since his graduation.  His dreams included starting the venture he designed while a student.  A new Best Venture Idea Competition will be launched in his name later this spring.

Fourth Co-hort of E-Scholars complete Entrepreneurial Studies Program

In the spring of 2009 twelve students completed the third E-Scholars program.  Students completing the program are:  Brooke Miller, Magalena Adamczyk, Bibi Abdalla, Andrea Carrow, Michael Casper, Maura Cavanaugh, Felipe Concha-Berger, Marta Gago, Barry Griffin, Mitch Hallan, Ang Li, Brittany Coleman and Silu Ma.  Read More.

We have selected our newest group of E-Scholars! Keenan Brugh, Anne Carney, Ben Crist, David Forster, Kira Garrett, Sarah Hupperts, Jingkun Li, Ben McDermott, Jared Sherlock, Grady Sloan and Hao Li. They will be a part of the sixth cohort of E-scholars.

Current Events

  • We host an Entrepreneurial Leadership Series Luncheon at the Minneapolis Club in Downtown Minneapolis. Our next luncheon is Thursday, July 9th, 2009.  The featured speaker is Mike McCarthy.
  • Future dates for the speaker series are:  September 10th 2009, November 5th 2009, and March 11th 2010 and May 13, 2010. 
  • Remembering Eric Rego, E-Scholar first cohort. Eric graduated from St. John's in 2006 and was part of the first group of Entrepreneurial Scholars. Eric passed away in December 2008 and will be missed by everyone who new him. Wednesday, April 22nd we had our first annual Eric Rego Student Venture Idea Competition. Twenty two students participated in the event. The panel of judges included Mark and Sonia Reed, Eric's parents, Katie Kalkman, a fellow E-1, and Kirk Studebaker and Jim Oricchio, who worked with Eric at Corrdinated Business Systems. For this competition, each student was to deliver a 90 second elevator pitch to the panel of judges. The students were judged on providing a clear image of the opportunity, describing the target market, explaining how they would obtain funds and on their delivery of their presentation. Prizes were awarded to first, second and third place. Third place winner was Matt Mulligan who won a $25 dollar visa card, second place was awarded to Anne Carney, who recieved at $50 dollar visa card and first place was awarded to Kira Garrett, who received a $100 dollar visa card for her pitch. The event was a huge success. We are honored to be able to remember Eric with such a great event.
