330 Christian Spirituality. (4)

A study of the Christian tradition of spirituality as reflected by some classic and contemporary Christian writers, with particular focus on beliefs (such as Trinity, Christ, grace, redemption, death and resurrection), and their influence on Christian living today. The course also includes a consideration of elements of Christian formation (such as prayer, reading, solitude, communal and personal efforts, asceticism and social responsibility). 

331 The Benedictine Tradition. (4)

The origins of monasticism and its influence on the development of Christianity within Western culture. The origins and history of the Saint John's and/or Saint Benedict's monasteries. 

332 Benedictine Spirituality and Community. (4)

Laymen and women throughout the centuries have drawn life and sustenance from Benedictine spirituality. This integrated course combines academic study of Benedictine spirituality and values with a community living experience. Areas covered include the study of monastic vocation within the fundamental Christian vocation, the Rule of Benedict and other monastic sources, essentials of Christian and Benedictine spirituality, the rise and development of Christian monasticism, the development of the Catholic intellectual life, the heritage and charisms of Saint John’s Abbey and Saint Benedict’s Monastery, and the integration of Benedictine values in one’s chosen vocation and life. The community living experience provides the context in which what is learned academically can be practiced and reflected upon alone and with others. 

339 Topics in Doctrinal Theology. (4)

Course title and description will be listed in the official class schedule. Topics will be drawn from traditional and contemporary themes and issues. May be repeated for credit.
