Assessment

The Philosophy Department conducts regular assessment of student learning in the major. We seek to evaluate (a) our majors’ comprehension of fundamental philosophical concepts, (b) the extent to which this comprehension enables majors to perceive greater complexity in the human and natural worlds, (c) majors’ ability to apply these concepts meaningfully and constructively, and (d) their ability to construct well-formed arguments that make use of these concepts.

Methods of assessment include a yearly analysis of student portfolios and focus group interviews with graduating seniors. Since portfolios contain essays written both before and after the student has declared philosophy as a major, the department advises all majors to keep track of essays written for all philosophy classes.

The Philosophy Department regards a major in philosophy above all as preparation for life. For that reason we seek to maintain contact with majors after graduation to learn how well they are doing and how well they think the Department prepared them for the life path they have chosen.
